diesel ping?

Hello all, I have a Canyon SLT 2.8 Dmax with 3500km on it.

I'm getting a slight rattling sound under load at around 1500-2000 RPM that sounds like pinging on an old V8 when you had the timing too far advanced or you had fuel with too low octane. Kind of like the noise you hear when you shake a can of spray paint. You can only hear the noise with the windows up and the audio off. This is my first diesel so I'd like to know if this is normal in these. I've driven other 4-cylinder diesels and I don't hear this noise. Dealership is no help because they have no other 2.8 dmax's in stock to compare it to. It does not make the noise when revved in Park.

Thanks

My fourth diesel and they all make some pinging, rattling noises, although the Duramax seems to be the quietest of the four (VW 1.9, VW 5.0, MB 2.1, and DMax 2.8). Mine sounds like a sewing machine running from under the left front hood area. I have had a real ominous sound under the conditions you described after about 300 miles. I believe it may have been the DEF/particulate filter system as it has not recurred since. 950 miles on as of this post. Not sure my post will assure you of worry you, but I am cataloging all the little things for my first visit in about 4 months.
