I've noticed that after a few minutes sitting at idle, I hear a noise over the exhaust that sounds like a waste gate or pressure by pass. Is this normal for these Duramax engines? I have a 2019 ZR2 with about 8K miles.

Thanks!

Does this happen all the time? If so, it might just be the turbo. I don't know if they've made updates to them on the newer models or not. By the turbo I mean, on the 6.6 Duramax in the full-size trucks, from 2004.5 and on, they have used variable vane or variable geometry turbos (2001 to 2004 used fixed vane turbos), so at idle, they would switch from open to close on the vanes depending what the engine needed, thus giving you a different exhaust tone. Our truck use a variable geometry turbo I believe, so there is the possibility that they do the same thing.

There is also the possibility that it could be something to do with the regen process as well, if you are doing a lot of short commutes and not getting up to speed for long enough for the truck to regen normally.

I typically get up to 50 - 60 mph for 25 -30 min every (most) week. I guess time will tell, so far no codes! I do think these have the variable vane turbos so that's a distinct possibility. The short answer is don't let is sit and idle too much, I don't get the impression these engines like just sitting there at idle for hours like the big rigs!

Dave I have observed the the same thing with my 2019 The sound is a low frequency muffled sound usually in three bursts lasting two or three seconds. it is coming from the engine compartment.. If it is from the regen system I would like to know how that system works ?? I have asked the mechanic at the dealership and just get a blank stare. I have Dodge Ram
and a jeep liberty crd both with turbos and never heard sounds like this. The 2005 jeep lib crd engine I believe is the genesis of our baby Duramax.. My 2019 colorado has 15 k miles.
