I hit a really rough patch of road on trip pulling #7000 LB loaded enclosed trailer and now truck has high speed whine. Sounds like it is coming from rear end. I have crawled under and jacked up each wheel to see if I can find anything obvious but not nothing. I then attempted to jack up rear and run truck (4WD diesel Colorado, 45k miles) but truck would not go above idle so could not replicate speed and sound. I am thinking computer does not like speed mismatch or something, it is in 2WD mode. This does not make sense to me as I can spin the tires when on dirt. Any way internet search leads me to believe it is the rear end ring and pinion. The question is, can the truck make it home 2500 miles pulling the trailer. The trailer will be unloaded going home.

Good luck, I don't think anyone will be able to answer without actually being able to have hands on.
The idle thing is the stabilitrak, it's not seeing the fronts moving so it's going keep the motor in low torque mode. If you press and hold the stabilitrak button for like 8 seconds it will disable it. If memory serves me right I think you can't go over 30 mph and if you take your foot totally of the go pedal it will turn off.

Edit: You could also pull the stabilitrak fuse under the hood for your test.

I will try disabling it today and jack it back up.
Thanks

If the sound changes only with road speed and not engine RPM or transmission gear then it's definitely something rear of the transmission. You could also try shifting it into 4L and see if there's any change in pitch/tone compared to 2H, just make sure if you do this on pavement that you only drive in a straight line in 4L, don't make any sharp turns.

Something else to check would be the parking brake shoes and parking brake function. I had one of the shoes detach and start making noise out of the blue, it's possible the rough road knocked the friction material off of the backing.

With only 45k miles it should still be under the powertrain warranty, assuming you haven't passed the 5 year mark, in which case if it is a bearing issue or something of the like then it should be covered under warranty.

Defeated stabilitrak and jacked up rear of truck. At 25 mph it sure sounded like the rear end was whining. Talked with my dealer who called Chevrolet and she said warranty should cover it. The reason this is even more of an issue is that I am currently in Mazatlan Mexico. There is a large Chevrolet dealer here so in the next couple of day I will be visiting it.
