Picked up a low mileage 2018 ZR2 with the 2.8 a couple weeks ago. Has 10k miles on it, and Ill be adding miles on it at a slow pace, but when I do, its usually highway trips instead of short around town trips. Will also be using to haul music gear and a fishing boat at times.
Ive always been into modding vehicles, and expect this will be no different.
I look forward to learning.

Most of the topics under Maintenance, Mechanical or General Discussion will be of help to you. Just depends if you run into any issues.

Be wary of letting the dealer or a shop change your oil: many horror stories of them using the wrong weight of oil or a non Dexos2 oil for those vehicles under warranty.

Change your differential fluids sooner than later: wish I had done both before 40k miles, they were disgusting. Change the transfer case and transmission fluid (and filter) around 40-50k mikes or sooner if your truck is shifting hard or funny.

Make sure to drive at least one long drive of 30 minutes or more at 40+ mph a week to get the DPF up to temp long enough to do a regen cycle. The longer the trips at higher speeds you do, the happier the truck will be. Short commutes of 15 minutes or less at city speeds will cause problems.

Would highly recommend an oil catch can. There are a few articles on here about this to explain why you need it, just search for them.

Use a diesel fuel additive of good quality. I know our engines are made to run on Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel but I still believe it’s hard on parts internally. Something that adds lubrication (and cetane but that’s a bonus) is good. Something like Stanadyne, JD Fuel Protect, AMSOIL Injector Clean + Cetane Boost or Opti-Lube XPD. If you live in a cold climate, consider getting an Anti-Gel from any of those companies as well.

  • Welcome. I hope yours starts out as good for you as mine has for me.
  • The previous post regarding the correct oil is valid. I just had my 2nd and last 'free' oil change at the GMC store at 13,432 mi. For both oil changes I requested the oil containers be brought out to me. Too many dealers' service departments are in the '2500/3500 diesel frame of mind versus these low volume 2.8's and their different oil requirements, so I don't take a chance.
  • From now on I will do my own maintenance.
Good luck with your ZR2! What's the color?
