Normal for a diesel to have black oil, even right after an oil change

Well we have 4200mi. on ours and plan on doing 1 free oil change at 5000mi. to get factory/break-in oil out. Not a drop leaked or burnt as of yet and no RE-GEN cycle. So I'm pleased so far with this vehicle. Average 27mpg overall and have gotten as high as 31mpg if I keep it under 55 MPH.:)

I idled for about an hour earlier while waiting for my wife to get her nails done and the truck did a regen immediately after I started moving again

Got to say, I'm at ~14K now and have never noticed or seen a message/display that a re-gen cycle was happening and the two services at the dealer so far haven't shown any weird error codes so it must be happening on the sly for me. My normal daily driving is short freeway hops at 60mph for about 10 minutes each so maybe things don't build up as quick.

Doesn't give you a message or anything. You'd never know it was happening if you're driving the whole time. If you know what to look for you can spot them... When you come to a stop you'd see higher idle rpm (900 vs 750ish) enough to notice. You also won't get 99mpg instant readout on deceleration fuel cut off during a regen. If you have a scanner, one of the pids is distance since regen, it'll reset to zero after a regen is complete

I was under the understanding that you would get a prompt on the dash info screen and I have not seen anything yet but I did put 2.5 gal. of DEF when it got down to 24% at 1650mi. (dealer d/n topped it off). Soooo maybe it does it when I'm not looking LoL:confused:

Have to keep and eye out for high idle RPM. Don't drive short hauls w/truck, a lot of county roads and two lane hi-ways. Not much city driving unless the wife goes shopping. So I guess I'll pay closer attention or just let it do it's thing and I'll just drive it !!

I do a lot of short trips. Longest regular trip is about 5 miles, otherwise .5-2 miles is regular. Every time my idle goes above 750, I take for a 30 minutes freeway ride and it does it's thing. All good.

The one thing I like about this truck is, its have been 3 weeks since it saw a gas(diesel) station. My tundra saw the gas station every week. And I do the same driving, .5-2 miles per trip.

My shop is just under ten miles from the house and if my truck starts a regen on the way in, it'll pick up where it left off and finish up after work on the way home. Takes about 18 mins on average for my truck and driving

Must be nice having your shop so close. The closes I have ever work to my home is about 20 miles...

I checked with Amsoil, and their recommendation is their European 5W30 oil for the D2.8. It exceeds DEXOS2 standards. I've used Amsoil for over 20 years with never any problems, gas and diesel vehicles. It's a bit more pricey, but so are repair bills.

Personally, because the Manuel recommends a synthetic blend for a reason, maybe because non syn oil absorbs into metals where full syn does not? At least that's what I've heard.
